I am a new Christian, what's next?

Great question! New Christians are excited about their new found faith and are anxious to learn more and grow. The following are recommendation to consider;
  1. Find a spiritual mentor; someone who will pray for you, guide you, encourage you, and be available to answer any questions you may have.

  2. Find a church. Becoming a part of the church community is important for fellowship with other Christians, as well as discovering areas within the church to serve as a part of the body.

  3. Join a small group. Typically, small groups meet on a weekly basis and are formed to support one another in your faith. In many ways, the small group experience becomes a smaller version of the church and allows each group member an opportunity to grow in a “safe and nurturing environment.

  4. Sign up for ALPHA. ALPHA is a great introductory course to Christianity, both for seekers and new believers. Click on the following link to learn more about ALPHA; http://alpha.org

How did sin enter the world?

Sin entered the world through Adam when he disobeyed God by eating of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 3:11-13

Why did God allow sin to enter the world?

God made man as a free moral agent with the power to choose over good and evil.  His desire was that His creatures should choose to love and worship Him voluntarily, and desire good rather than evil.  But if a creature has the power to choose what is good, he or she must also have the power to choose evil.

Genesis 2:15-17

How did Adam's sin affect the world?

Adam's sinful nature was passed onto all generations.

Genesis 3:20

What is Repentance?

Repentance means being sorry for your sin and being committed to a new way of life serving God.

Matthew 3:2

What is grace?

Grace is the unmerited favor of God shown to people who deserve the very opposite.  It is God offering salvation as a free gift.

Acts 15:11

What is Salvation?

Salvation is eternal life with God. The Bible tells us our life on earth is only temporary and that eternal life comes through the person of Jesus Christ. It is only through Jesus that we find eternal life. For more on salvation, go to the homepage and click on Prayer of Salvation.

Romans 3:24

Once I am saved, can I ever lose my salvation?

No, not if you have confessed with your heart that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior.

Hebrews 10:26

What does it mean to be "born again"?

As a newborn child, we are physically born into the world, yet spiritually we are dead due to original sin. Jesus said that to enter the kingdom of heaven, a person must be born again. This re-birth consists of the heart committing and believing in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

John 1:12-13

Hebrews 11:6

How can I be certain that Jesus is my Lord and Savior?

The Bible says; "For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Also, "Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Romans 8:14

What is the trinity?

The bible teaches us through the scripture that the trinity is only one God who has revealed himself in three persons; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Scripture does not teach that there are three Gods, but that these three persons are one God.

Matthew 28:19

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit exists as a part of the trinity. As a Christian, it is the Holy Spirit that dwells within us and guides our hearts toward a Christ-centered life.

John 3:5-6

Legalism, what does it mean?

Legalism is a term used to describe faith by works, that salvation is earned through what we do instead of who we know. This is contrary to Christianity. Salvation does not come through our works, but instead through the person of Jesus Christ. Through the blood of Jesus and His death on the cross, our sins have been forgiven, there is nothing more we must do for our salvation. Jesus resurrection proved that His sacrifice for our sin was acceptable to God.

Romans 3:27

What are spiritual gifts?

Spiritual gifts are just that, gifts from God. As children of God, each of us has been uniquely made and blessed with gifts from our Father in Heaven. The following are a sampling of spiritual gifts; teaching, preaching, evangelism, faith, leadership, mercy, and compassion. These gifts given to us by God are to be used in serving others and in serving the body of the church.

1 Corinthians 12: 7-11

How can I learn more about my spiritual gifts?

There are many different assessment tools available. Click the following link for an excellent spiritual gifts assessment; http://www.assess-yourself.org

Once I discover my spiritual gifts, then what?

That is a great question! One response would be to follow your heart and serve where you feel led. Serving in an area which you are passionate about will lead you to become inspired and easily motivated to serve. However, long term focus and growth are equally important. Serving AND drawing closer to God come through purpose and having a clearly defined PATH. Go to the homepage and click on the PATH to learn more.

1 Timothy 4:14-15

How can I know God's purpose for my life?

Proverbs 3:5-6

What does Sanctification mean?

The word sanctification is fundamental to the life of a Christian. Sanctification comes from the root work sanctify, defined as "to cleanse or make holy." In the Christian faith, to become sanctified is to become Christ-like. As Christians, our life-long goal on earth is to be just like Jesus.

Romans 6:12

Do I have to be baptized to be saved?

Nowhere in the bible does it talk about baptism as a requirement to salvation. Salvation comes only through the person of Jesus Christ and that we acknowledge Him as our Lord and Savior.

Baptism, however, is an act which many Christians choose to partake in, as it physically demonstrates the act of cleansing and renewal. For many, it is this physical act which symbolizes their spiritual rebirth.

Matthew 3:11

Why do we read the Bible?

The Bible alone is the revealed word of God. In order to fully know and understand the ways of God, we must read and understand the meaning of His word. The claim that the Bible is the word of God is not made by any church or religious institution, but by the Bible itself. (John 1:1) Therefore, reading the Bible provides positive insights into God's nature and gives us an excellent roadmap to live our lives.

What is tithing?

Tithing can be defined as "giving back" to God, usually in the amount of one tenth of one's income. Tithing is important in the church community, as it is the primary means by which God's servants and the church are financially supported for the work they do in serving God's people. As God's servants, many individuals have given up stable, regular paying occupations in order to serve God and the congregation. In exchange for their commitment, the Bible instructs us to offer back to God tithes which support the church and its servants. Tithing can come in many forms; money, time, and material assets are a few examples.

2 Corinthians 9:6-9

Why does God allow evil to exist?

The Bible is very clear that God did not create the world as it is today, but that evil came about as a result of man's own selfishness. Since the time of Adam and Eve's sin in the Garden of Eden, man has been separated from the sinless nature of God. Since God loves us all so much, he gave us the gift of free will. He did this because true love can only exist when there is a choice to love or disobey. Therefore, the evil which exists in our world today is not the result of God's desire, but man's own choice to disobey God. This answers the question of why we live in a world where evil exists, but we still do not know why God continues to allow evil to exist. The Bible offers no explanation of this, but does state that in the end, good will prevail over evil. The Bible also tells us that God is all wise and all knowing and that He has reasons for allowing things to happen that are beyond our comprehension.

Genesis 2:15-17

What does it mean that we are created "In His image?"

This phrase can initially cause some confusion, since God bears no physical image. Therefore, the image we are created in relates to our emotional and spiritual being, that which is not physical. God has created each of us with a longing desire to be loved, respected and appreciated. He planted eternity in our hearts, so that we long for something more than the world has to offer; we long for Him. To be created in the image of God is to say that we love and desire Jesus Christ as much as God the Father.

Genesis 1:27

Why is it important to memorize scripture?

What you fill your heart and mind with is what you become. Memorizing scripture helps you meditate on God's life-changing words.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

Do I have to earn God's acceptance?

No one can earn God's acceptance. Nothing we could ever do could compensate for our sin. The only way to be accepted by God is to believe that his Son, Jesus Christ, died for your sins so that you could be free to enjoy eternal life with him. When you accept his forgiveness and let him be Lord of your life, he completely accepts you into his presence, it's as simple as that.

Romans 3:27

How can I strengthen my faith?

Your faith will grow stronger as you study the Bible and reflect on the truths it sets forth about who God is and his guidelines for your life.  The following are additional recommendations to consider:

  • Find a bible based church to attend
  • Get involved in a small group
  • Step out and serve

Jude 20

What does it mean to be forgiven?

Forgiveness means that God looks at you as though you have never sinned. You are blameless before him. When God forgives, he doesn't sweep your sins under the carpet; instead, he completely washes them away.

Hebrews 10:16-17

What is prayer?

Communication with God.  Prayer is us speaking to God, meditation is us listening to God.

2 Chronicles 7:14

Is there a "right way" to pray?

There is no one right way to pray. Honest communication with God and humble listening from God can take many forms. Don't get hung up on whether or not you're praying correctly, just pray.

Philippians 4:6-7

Is being tempted to sin the same as sinning?

Jesus was often tempted, yet he never gave into the temptations. Therefore, since Jesus was sinless, being tempted is not the same as sinning. We don't have to feel guilty about the temptations we wrestle with. Instead, we can devote ourselves to resisting them.

Luke 4:1-2

To whom do we confess our sins, God or others?

We confess sin to God first, for only God can forgive sin. It is also important to confess sin to those whom we have wronged.

James 5:16

What happens when someone dies?

Believers in Jesus Christ who die will meet God and live with him forever. A person who is not a believer in Jesus Christ will be condemned to eternal punishment.

John 11:25-26

Why should I be involved in church?

Even though God lives in the heart of every believer, he commands us to gather with other believers. All believers together form God's family. When we gather together, we can build each other up and support one another.

Hebrews 10:24-25

What is heaven like?

In heaven, we will live forever with God. There will be no sadness, no pain, no evil, and no death. Everything will be perfect and glorious. God will give us each a new body and we will be able to talk face to face with the Lord himself.

Phillippians 3:21

Is there really a place called hell?

Although we don't know where hell is, it definitely exists. Our imagination cannot comprehend how horrible hell is. Here on earth we tend to think in time spans that have a beginning and an end. There will be no end to hell.

1 Thessalonians 1:7-9

How do we know that God is male and not female?

God is beyond human categories of male and female; nonetheless, Jesus called Him "Father" and we ought to follow His example.

Matthew 6:9

What does your spirit look like?

A lot like your body. Paul couldn't tell the difference in 2 Corinthians 12 Both before the resurrection on the last day and after, we will look much like ourselves, but will be glorified. Jesus still had holes in His hands and feet, still ate, but had new powers and was a little hard to recognize at first.

John 20:14

If a person sins a lot, will he/she go to hell?

If Adolph Hitler received Christ before his death, you will see him in heaven. See the thief on the cross (Luke 23:43). This will bother us like it bothered the older brother (Luke 15).

Where do Jewish people go?

According to Paul in Romans 11:26, all Israel will be saved. How this will happen is unclear. If you have Jewish friends, in any case, DO share Christ with them.

Romans 11:28-29

When will Christ return?

When the Gospel has been preached to all peoples and nations.

Mark 13:10

Does the Devil really exist?

The devil is alive and real. The Bible calls him "the god of this world" and states that he "deceives the whole world."  God originally created three archangels: Lucifer (who became Satan), Michael and Gabriel. Each ruled one-third of hundreds of millions of angels. Lucifer ruled the pre-Adamic world with his third. He, along with his angels, rebelled against the government of God, and today he leads these now fallen angels, or demons, as the "god of this world."

Ephesians 6:10-12

Is Cremation wrong?

Based upon biblical examples, the deceased should simply be buried. However, in situations in which surviving relatives may have no control over the disposition of the body, it is important to remember that what happens to our bodies after death is of no consequence. God's Word promises that all people will be resurrected whether their bodies became dust or ashes.

Genesis 3:19

Is suicide a sin?

The Sixth Commandment states, "Thou shall not kill."  Notice that there is no distinction made between killing another person and killing oneself.  One who kills himself is certainly in jeopardy of being left in an unrepentant condition.

Exodus 20:13

Should Christians involve themselves with fraternal orders or lodges that exist today?

By working together, these members, ideally, can make the world a better place.  However, these organizations have no concern as to which religion their members follow.  If a Christian were a member of one of these groups, he would be breaking God's command to be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers.  In addition, many of the traditions and rituals of these organizations, as they will freely admit, are of pagan origin.

2 Corinthians 6:14-16

What does the Bible say concerning Satan's fate?

The Bible only hints at the nature of the punishment of Satan and his demons. However, the Bible does say that Satan and his demons will be banished by God from the universe, to never again be able to influence anyone.

Revelations 20:10

Will aborted, miscarried and stillborn babies be brought back to life in the resurrection?

God's master plan is to offer salvation (eternal life) to all who have ever lived, and will live in the future. Every person who died without having the opportunity to receive this great gift will be raised, and be given the chance to receive immortality.

2 Corinthians 5:10

Should we pray for the dead?

Our prayers should be on behalf of the living, not the dead. Prayers for the dead are meaningless. This custom has its origin in the false teaching that human beings possess immortal souls....this is not true.

Matthew 6:9-13

What happens to those who die, but have never heard the Gospel message?

God will resurrect all who have died, giving those to whom salvation was never offered their opportunity for it. Most of humanity has not yet been given this opportunity. They will receive it at the end of the millennium.

2 Corinthians 5:10

What about reincarnation?

Christianity does not endorse the notion of reincarnation.  In the Bible, it does not say that you will return to another body when you die. It says that you will return to dust.

Genesis 3:19

Did Jesus rise from the dead in a literal body?

Yes, His resurrected body was a body of real flesh and bones.

Luke 24:39

Can't I find heaven through a life of good works and obedience to God?

Jesus was sinless and obedient to God.  However, no mere man is able to follow that example.  Moreover, the only reason Jesus died is because men could be saved no other way.

Romans 3:20

What is the primary purpose of the 10 Commandments?

They were given to man for a couple reasons. First, to give us a roadmap for our lives.  And second, it is a reminder of our sinful condition and our need for God.

Romans 5:20

If I become a Christian, I will have to give up a lot in life?

Christ does not come to steal, kill and destroy.  Instead, He comes to give life and give it in ABUNDANCE.   The initial comment is usually this; "I just can't face the costs of becoming a Chiristian."  The proper response would be; "Have you ever faced the cost of NOT becoming a Christian?"

1 Peter 3:8-12

Once I become a Chirstian, am I then free to sin since my salvation is already in tact?

No, if you have truly given your life to Christ, your heart should be against any such thought.  To do otherwise may suggest that you were never saved in the first place.

Romans 8:5

Where did the Bible originate?

The Holy Bible is the inspired word of God.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
